In the early 1700s, French explorers and traders traveled along the area’s large rivers. Fort Gibson, the first army post in Indian Territory, was established in Muskogee County in 1824. The first railroad was built in Muskogee County in 1871 and more railroads followed, leading to new towns being formed.
